“There are those who believe that life here began out there, far across the universe, with tribes of humans, who may have been the fore fathers of the Egyptians, or the Toltecs, or the Mayans. Some believe that there may yet be brothers of man, who even now fight to survive, somewhere beyond the heavens.” So goes the opening theme, from the original Battlestar Galactica in 1978.

The series begins with humans living on the Twelve Colonies, a group of planets, in the fictional Cyrannus galaxy. When a race of cybernetic beings known as the Cylons, attacks the colonies in an attempt to exterminate the human race. This forces the humans to take to space, in a ragtag fleet of space vessels.

Under the protection of the Battlestar Galactica, they set off to find the thirtieth colony, Earth. And along the way they are constantly harassed by the Cylons, with the aid of a traitorous human named Baltar.

The fleet eventually reaches Earth, in the revival of the series Galactica 1980. However they find that Earth, has not developed the technology necessary, to aid in the fight with the Cylons. So they try to covertly advance the technology of the planet, in order to battle the Cylons.

The premise of Battlestar Galactica has been revived many more times, the latest being SyFy’s Caprica. Set in the time frame before the attack on the human race. Caprica will explore how the Cylons came about, and hopefully answer the question, of just why they seem to have it out for human kind. That question was never addressed in the original series.

There are many things about Star Trek that make it an informative and well thought out television series that everyone should watch even today. Throughout its many years on air the original and the various new shows about the series that came on after have shown all of us that good can overcome evil and that the battle of mankind can be fought in one’s mind and throughout space itself.

Its amazing creatures and vivid landscapes make it a must see television show. One can never get bored watching it in reruns. The captain of Star Trek is someone with a broad leadership ability and a human frailty which anyone can identify to. Its a tough job to be captain of the Enterprise.

Star Trek took the world of space from an unknown thought to a reality and anyone who watched it always came away with more questions then answers always wondering what is really out there beyond the stars. Star Trek took into question even if we as a planet should explore other planets is it a good idea and will we be able to make connections with them the same way we do here on Earth. Sometimes it worked while other times it was best left alone. Diplomatic relations with strange new species caused friction and mistrust that sometimes dealt with emotions or even the lack of emotions that made it hard to build new allies and friendships and also created stories which can be used even today in society. In the long run showing us that where we came from is just as important as where we end up.

The X-Files is a television series that follows 2 FBI agents, played by David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson, as they investigate strange and unexplained cases. Duchovny plays Fox Mulder, who believes in aliens and unexplained phenomenon. Mulder’s belief in extra-terrestrials started at a young age when he witnesses his younger sister, Samantha, being abducted by aliens. Samantha’s disappearance starts Mulder on a life-long quest to find out what happened to his sister. Gillian Anderson plays Dana Scully, a scientist who believes that there is a reasonable explanation for everything that is happening and that there are no aliens or strange creatures on Earth. Scully plays the perfect opposite of Mulder as she is ready and willing to provide a rational explanation to whatever happens to them on their cases.

Because Mulder and Scully work for the FBI, they have rules and regulations to follow. Mulder, however, has difficulties following these guidelines. His supervisor, Agent Skinner, tries to keep him out of trouble. Helping him with information are a series of mysterious men that he meets in dark and quiet places. These men provide Mulder with knowledge regarding government conspiracies and mysteries that keep the FBI agent jumping. There is also a mysterious smoking man, who has no name and is only known by his cigarette habit, that seems to want to harm Agents Mulder and Scully. There are also The Lone Gunmen, who are a trio of geniuses that help the agents out when they can.

The X-Files is a series that generates more questions than it answers. There seem to be more questions and conspiracies at every turn.

“It’s a bird, it’s a plane…No, it’s superman!” Who never heard of these famous lines from most superman series? This superhero is one of the most sought-after protagonists in cinemas worldwide. With his humble beginnings, the character was portrayed by many actors. In a television appeal, Smallville seasons 1- 7 captured the hearts of every viewer because of patterning the story from the life of this very popular hero. It will not keep on airing if it is not being appreciated by many. Now, you may get to watch the adventures via Smallville DVD.

Much more than the adventures of superman, Smallville seasons 1 -7 promise a lot of other things. First, it adds more romance to the sci-fi hit. Second, it is the typical primetime TV show which earned loud applauses and outstanding remarks from its viewers. Lastly, it continues to fill-in the households of many. Be impressed about Clark Kent’s teenage life in a different setting. Get to know how the Lex Luthor in the series once became his ally before being his villain in his elderly years.

Smallville dealt more on the teenage life of superman. Instead of using the name Lois Lane as the girlfriend of the hero, Smallville seasons 1 -7 showed how Clark Kent struggled between two loves – Lana and Chloe. These two teenage girls fire up the romantic escapades of Clark and brought the stories to some twist and turns. Did you miss any of the episodes in the season? It is your chance to reminisce any of these points by buying the Smallville DVD series from your online shops.

Science Fiction came to American television in the fifties and special effects have always been important in TV Sci-Fi.

Early Science Fiction shows’ special effects or SPFX consisted of sets of cardboard and models hung with string. Many early Sci-Fi television shows used egg cartons and bubble wrap to make props. Now they use green screens and ultra tech CGI (computer generated imagery)

When the original Star Trek series went on the air in the 1960′s, they were not given a large budget. They had to keep it simple. To create monsters, the original series of Star Trek kept special effects basic. The tribbles were inspired by the story’s author’s girlfriend. She had a key chain with a piece of furry fluff on it. The fluffy tribbles were sewn together. To make them walk the heads of toy dogs were cut off and sewn into the tribble. For weird looking aliens from galaxies far away a costume worked best. Models of the ships were used when filming any outer space scenes. Compare that to the last installment of the Star Trek series, Enterprise, where all the special effects were done of CGI.

Babylon 5 is given the credit to being the first show to use CGI. The use of CGI meant shows didn’t have to use hand built models or sets. No more use of wire to hang spaceships. The CGI allowed for authentic looking ships to move about freely. Actors could be in some studio, yet their background could be of an alien planet. Actors did not have stand hours in a hot costume. The computer created the alien.
Now "Futurama" fans can rest easy and simply wait until their show is back on the air with brand new episodes.Comedy Central can be found on channel 107 on Dish Network.

A few months ago, it was reported that Fox was seeking new actors to voice the characters on the returning animated sitcom “Futurama.” Now comes word that all of the original actors will be back, this time on their new home at Comedy Central on DISH.”Futurama” is an animated sci-fi sitcom that was created by Matt Groening (of “Simpsons” fame). The series follows the adventures of a former New York pizza boy after he is cryogenically frozen seconds after the start of the year 2000, and later thawed out on New Year’s Eve 2999.

The series premiered on Fox in March 1999 and ran until August 2003 before production was stopped and the show continued in reruns for satellite and cable tv customers on Adult Swim and Cartoon Network. In December 2007, when the network’s contract expired, the show disappeared from the airwaves again.

“Futurama” came back in the form of four straight-to-DVD films (the last one having been released in January 2009). Recently, however, Comedy Central entered into an agreement with 20th Century Fox Television to syndicate the episodes and then air brand new episodes as well. However, in early July, a blow came to “Futurama” fans when Fox put out a casting call for all new actors to voice the roles on the show. Word on the street was that the original actors’ salary demands could not be met, and Fox would have to replace them.

Fans were devastated; first the great news that their show was coming back on the air, then the heartbreaking news that it would be sans the original cast. Many people wondered – what’s the point of even bringing the show back at all if you don’t have the original cast? Fox remained positive about the change, saying that they looked forward to finding new talent to bring the characters to life. Now there is good news again. Five members the original cast are now returning for the series’ reboot, thanks to a deal just sealed with 20th Century Fox TV.

Variety reported that Katey Sagal, Maurice LaMarche, Tress MacNeille, Billy West, and John DiMaggio will continue to provide their character voices for 26 new episodes of the animated Matt Groening sci-fi comedy, which will start airing on Comedy Central in 2010. In a joint statement issued tonight, Groening and co-producer David X. Cohen said: “We are thrilled to have our incredible cast back. The call has already gone out to the animators to put the mouths back on the characters.” Now “Futurama” fans can rest easy and simply wait until their show is back on the air with brand new episodes.Comedy Central can be found on channel 107 on Dish Network.

To anyone who is interested in Leonard Nimoy trivia, there is another name which is almost as commonly associated with the face of this man as his own – that name is of course Mr. Spock, the character that Nimoy portrayed in the popular 1960's television show, Star Trek.

To anyone who is interested in Leonard Nimoy trivia, there is another name which is almost as commonly associated with the face of this man as his own – that name is of course Mr. Spock, the character that Nimoy portrayed in the popular 1960′s television show, Star Trek. Even though Star Trek was only on the air for a few years, a much shorter time than many of today’s more popular television shows, the characters that were created in that short time have gone on to become among the most popular in American today. That original show spawned several other television programs including The Next Generation, Deep Space Nine, Voyager, and Enterprise, and of course nine feature films, including several in which Nimoy would reprise his character of Spock.

Any Leonard Nimoy quiz is going to be mostly filled with questions about his portrayal of the half vulcan half human Spock, and so we will be sure to give that its due regard here. Did you know that the original show only ran for 80 episodes? While this was the origination of the character of Mr. Spock, Nimoy would continue to play the character several other times over the years, right up until today. He played the character in the Star Trek films I-VI, as well as also reprising the role again in the most recent film “Star Trek” released in 2009.

Did you know that in addition to playing Mr. Spock on so many different occasions, Nimoy was also the director of a few of the Star Trek films? This is a little piece of Leonard Nimoy trivia that many who can only identify with him as his character are totally unaware of. He directed both Star Trek III: The Search for Spock, and Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home – which was, until the release of the new movie the most successful of any of the movies in the Star Trek franchise. His only other significant hit as a director was “Three Men and Baby” which was actually the highest grossing film the year of its release.

Did you know that Leonard Nimoy has also enjoyed considerable success in several other artistic arenas? He has released several recording albums, has published books of his photography, is a writer, including two autobiographies offering viewpoints of his reconciliation between himself and the character he is so famous for portraying, as well as being a published poet.

Merlin, the show and the actor, (Colin Morgan) provide a refreshing look at the legend of Merlin and his future king, Arthur Pendragon (Bradley James), as they move through the early years of self-discovery. The setting, Camelot under the harsh rule of King Uther Pendragon (Anthony Head of Buffy the Vampire Slayer), is one of repression against magic.

Youthful Merlin Becomes Protege of Gaius the Court Physician

Enter Merlin, the young protégé of Magister Gaius (Richard Wilson), court physician and family friend of Merlin’s mother. He comes to Camelot with a letter requesting Gaius’ help in protecting and training the teenage magician. The natural power of the future renowned sorcerer must be stifled and hidden from the knowledge of the court; else he will be killed, according to Uther’s twenty year old law. The old Pendragon, adamant that he has saved Camelot from the wicked practice of magic for twenty years, believes all sorcerers and magicians must be killed to preserve the peace.

Merlin hides his skill from the king, often having to suffer the insult, albeit humorous to viewers, of being tossed in the stocks and having rotten vegetables thrown at him. He plays the fool rather than let the court know of his prowess and natural expertise. The aged Gauis treats him as a son he never had and protects him from others discovering his true gifts while covertly instructing him in magic. Indeed, Gaius professes that Merlin’s talent is a gift that must be honed for good, rather than feared as the evil that Pendragon was against.

The Story of Merlin Has Many Variations and Veteran Actors Enhance TV Series

There are hundreds of variations of the story of Merlin, beginning as far back as the eighth century with Historia Brittonum by Nenius, an “inventive historian” according to Paul Halsall of the Internet Medial Source Book. Some distinctions in this series are that Merlin must hide his skill; Morgana (Katie McGrath) a.k.a. Morgan le Fey, is not the half-sister of Arthur, but a ward of Uther. It removes the ‘eeuw-factor’ and “icky references’ from an educated public regarding the attraction between them. Merlin is first called to his destiny by the last Dragon (John Hurt well known for his roles in The Lord of the Rings, Alien, Harry Potter and more), locked away (rather than killed by Uther) in caves under Camelot. The Dragon has Seer capabilities, giving Merlin a chance to understand his future in a way that Gauis cannot give him. Mordred is a Druid and lives among the Druid villagers. He is not an illegitimate child of Arthur or some type of relative to Pendragon. However, the Dragon tells Merlin that the child, Mordred (Asa Butterfield), will kill Arthur and that is consistent with many of the tales. Another distinction is that Gwen or Guinevere (Angel Coulby) is a servant, rather than a lady.

The character of Merlin is well played by Colin Morgan. He combines the confidence of someone who is used to playing with magic and the diffidence of a teenager. He is coming into his own and must discover the limits and the constraints that are forced on him as well as the ones he must place upon himself. Morgan shines with both the innocence and the savvy reactions that comprise the youthful Merlin.

It would come as no surprise to stalwart fans and the inimitable blessings of Guinness Book of World Records that Dr Who is the longest running Sci Fi series in the world-clocking in at over 760 episodes. Dr. Who was ushered into pop culture by the BBC on November 23, 1963 and was met with a smashing debut. It’s undoubtedly quirky Doctor with his 11 transformations, colorful Villains and dizzyingly fantastical plot twists have delighted (and frightened) children and die hard Sci Fans alike.

The show’s amazing run follows a deceptively simple premise in which the good Doctor is an extraterrestrial species from the fabled planet Gallifrey which are populated by advanced humanoids. He is a Time Lord who has the power to actively manipulate space and time with the use of advanced technology. The Doctor can accomplish this feat with the TARDIS—a time machine, of which he can explore time and history at his leisure. Often times he is accompanied by companions or assistants who are often human.

The series ran continuously from 1963 until 1989, before a hiatus ensued during the 90’s. There was however a TV movie that aired in 1996, but no new episodes were planned. Nevertheless, the show’s popularity remained high through syndication before Dr Who was ushered into the 21st century in 2005 and rejuvenated the series with great success. Naturally, Dr Who has legions of fans in just about every corner of the globe and continues to delight old and new fans alike. Of course, the series enduring longevity and fan loyalty assures that it will remain a permanent fixture in pop culture and the TV landscape.

It’s very hard to pick the top five sci-fi series of 2010 because it all depends on who you talk to. Asking young teens to young adult women you’ll find Vampire Diaries to be a major choice. I notice that girls and guys both like Supernatural and Smallville.

On the Syfy Channel people are watching Merlin on Friday nights. Ghost Hunters seems to be hanging on to it’s popularity, probably because it’s suppose to be real, showing just enough to keep us wondering.

Returning Sci-Fi series for 2010 are Stargate, Warehouse 13, Sanctuary, Caprica, Eureka, and Scare Tactics are still popular and they also have several new shows in the works.

Being Human is a new show for the Syfy channel based loosely on the Being Human on BBC. I watch the show on BBC so if Syfy’s show is anything like it, it should be good.

Then there’s Three Inches about super heroes, which seems to be popular based on the movie ticket sells for “Ironman, Wolverine, and Batman.

Then there’s Haven which is based on the novella “The Colorado Kid” by Stephen King. If you’re a reader of King’s books you already know he keeps his readers on the edge of there seats. Take my word if it says King there’s a very good chance it will be something special.

Then along with the new and return Sci-fi series for 2010, the Syfy Channel and Chiller has great made for tv. movies.

So where your looking for Sci-fi, fantasy or horror and gore you can find it this season on Syfy, WB, BBC or Chiller as Fox Mulder knew “It’s out there.”
