Several accomplished actors top the list of best sci-fi TV actors: William Schatner, David Duchovney, Joshua Jackson and Nathan Fillion. Each actor took a unique approach to deliver their character. However, they all have one thing in common, each actor memorialized the character they play and have solidified their position in sci-fi history.

In many cases, sci-fi seems to be a great way for celebrities to establish a name and a loyal following. The Star Trek series had only 80 original episodes; however, the memorable actors have made the series eternal. William Schatner starred in the original Star Trek series and immediately comes to mind when someone talks about Star Trek. Schatner has extended his Star Trek fame to become a famous pitchman and also has starred in other popular TV series including TJ Hooker and The Practice.

David Duchovney starred in another sci-fi franchise, The X-Files. His portrayal of FBI agent Fox Mulder developed a cult-like following and culminated in Duchovney starring in a film by the same name. He now stars in a popular Showtime series: Californication. Joshua Jackson stars in the series Fringe. Many consider this series a knock-off version of the X-Files because it also is utilizes the FBI as a backdrop.

Finally, Nathan Fillion starred in Firefly. Originally, the series was cancelled; however, it found a loyal following in reruns and DVD showings. Ultimately, the Firefly franchise produced a movie, a comic series and a video game. Fillion has gone on to popular roles in Desperate Housewives and now stars in the Castle series.

Where did he come from? Two answers to choose from and they’re both right.

The character was the imagination of Sydney Newman, (credited as creator from 1962-1989), and now being helmed by Russell T. Davies who’s also rebooted the history of the Doctor as well, giving us new possibilities in storylines.

Doctor Who’s planet of origin was Gallifrey. As we came to find out, The Doctor’s utopian planet was consumed in a war that had left him as the only survivor.

Doctor Who ages backwards. He started out as a wizened older man with radical thoughts and fabulous gadgets. And, through the decades he has been portrayed by no less than eleven actors… The most recent one, Matt Smith, is being hailed as a full-on hottie.

And, Amy Pond, the newest companion agrees… She did something none of the other companions ever did – well, this early on, that is… She kissed him!

Full on the mouth… Backing him into the door of the TARDIS, which was parked in her bedroom… In the middle of the night before her wedding….Which didn’t happen… Because, she was spirited away by that “strange man in the blue box”…. Ahem…

One of Sci-Fi’s greatest creations and Who are we to question it?

To my surprise I quickly came to know and admire Captain Picard and his crew. The characters had great depth and tackled some very serious delemmas. I was facinated by their pasts and intrigued to see how the past affected the present. The different backgrounds gave them special talents and abilities which contributed to the successes they experienced in each episode. Seeing how they interacted with each other and the other species they encountered lead me to examine my relationships and to have more respect for differences in people. Will’s allegience, Data’s scientific outlook, each character let us see the world through his eyes and it gave me a larger view of life. The ship itself was quite interesting. I have tried to imagine what kind of programs I would want to create on the holodeck. The possibilites are limitless. I know that I would want to learn to meet challenges with intelligence and sensitivity as these characters often did. However, I would want to have the strength and courage to physically fight if that were necessary. In my opinion, Star Trek TNG is top notch sci-fi.

The series begins with humans living on the Twelve Colonies, a group of planets, in the fictional Cyrannus galaxy. When a race of cybernetic beings known as the Cylons, attacks the colonies in an attempt to exterminate the human race. This forces the humans to take to space, in a ragtag fleet of space vessels.

Under the protection of the Battlestar Galactica, they set off to find the thirtieth colony, Earth. And along the way they are constantly harassed by the Cylons, with the aid of a traitorous human named Baltar.

The fleet eventually reaches Earth, in the revival of the series Galactica 1980. However they find that Earth, has not developed the technology necessary, to aid in the fight with the Cylons. So they try to covertly advance the technology of the planet, in order to battle the Cylons.

The premise of Battlestar Galactica has been revived many more times, the latest being SyFy’s Caprica. Set in the time frame before the attack on the human race. Caprica will explore how the Cylons came about, and hopefully answer the question, of just why they seem to have it out for human kind. That question was never addressed in the original series.

Its amazing creatures and vivid landscapes make it a must see television show. One can never get bored watching it in reruns. The captain of Star Trek is someone with a broad leadership ability and a human frailty which anyone can identify to. Its a tough job to be captain of the Enterprise.

Star Trek took the world of space from an unknown thought to a reality and anyone who watched it always came away with more questions then answers always wondering what is really out there beyond the stars. Star Trek took into question even if we as a planet should explore other planets is it a good idea and will we be able to make connections with them the same way we do here on Earth. Sometimes it worked while other times it was best left alone. Diplomatic relations with strange new species caused friction and mistrust that sometimes dealt with emotions or even the lack of emotions that made it hard to build new allies and friendships and also created stories which can be used even today in society. In the long run showing us that where we came from is just as important as where we end up.

Because Mulder and Scully work for the FBI, they have rules and regulations to follow. Mulder, however, has difficulties following these guidelines. His supervisor, Agent Skinner, tries to keep him out of trouble. Helping him with information are a series of mysterious men that he meets in dark and quiet places. These men provide Mulder with knowledge regarding government conspiracies and mysteries that keep the FBI agent jumping. There is also a mysterious smoking man, who has no name and is only known by his cigarette habit, that seems to want to harm Agents Mulder and Scully. There are also The Lone Gunmen, who are a trio of geniuses that help the agents out when they can.

The X-Files is a series that generates more questions than it answers. There seem to be more questions and conspiracies at every turn.

Much more than the adventures of superman, Smallville seasons 1 -7 promise a lot of other things.  First, it adds more romance to the sci-fi hit.  Second, it is the typical primetime TV show which earned loud applauses and outstanding remarks from its viewers.  Lastly, it continues to fill-in the households of many.  Be impressed about Clark Kent’s teenage life in a different setting.  Get to know how the Lex Luthor in the series once became his ally before being his villain in his elderly years.

Early Science Fiction shows’ special effects or SPFX consisted of sets of cardboard and models hung with string. Many early Sci-Fi television shows used egg cartons and bubble wrap to make props. Now they use green screens and ultra tech CGI (computer generated imagery)

When the original Star Trek series went on the air in the 1960′s, they were not given a large budget. They had to keep it simple. To create monsters, the original series of Star Trek kept special effects basic. The tribbles were inspired by the story’s author’s girlfriend. She had a key chain with a piece of furry fluff on it. The fluffy tribbles were sewn together. To make them walk the heads of toy dogs were cut off and sewn into the tribble. For weird looking aliens from galaxies far away a costume worked best. Models of the ships were used when filming any outer space scenes. Compare that to the last installment of the Star Trek series, Enterprise, where all the special effects were done of CGI.

Babylon 5 is given the credit to being the first show to use CGI. The use of CGI meant shows didn’t have to use hand built models or sets. No more use of wire to hang spaceships. The CGI allowed for authentic looking ships to move about freely. Actors could be in some studio, yet their background could be of an alien planet. Actors did not have stand hours in a hot costume. The computer created the alien.

The series premiered on Fox in March 1999 and ran until August 2003 before production was stopped and the show continued in reruns for satellite and cable tv customers on Adult Swim and Cartoon Network. In December 2007, when the network’s contract expired, the show disappeared from the airwaves again.

“Futurama” came back in the form of four straight-to-DVD films (the last one having been released in January 2009). Recently, however, Comedy Central entered into an agreement with 20th Century Fox Television to syndicate the episodes and then air brand new episodes as well. However, in early July, a blow came to “Futurama” fans when Fox put out a casting call for all new actors to voice the roles on the show. Word on the street was that the original actors’ salary demands could not be met, and Fox would have to replace them.

Fans were devastated; first the great news that their show was coming back on the air, then the heartbreaking news that it would be sans the original cast. Many people wondered – what’s the point of even bringing the show back at all if you don’t have the original cast? Fox remained positive about the change, saying that they looked forward to finding new talent to bring the characters to life. Now there is good news again. Five members the original cast are now returning for the series’ reboot, thanks to a deal just sealed with 20th Century Fox TV.

Variety reported that Katey Sagal, Maurice LaMarche, Tress MacNeille, Billy West, and John DiMaggio will continue to provide their character voices for 26 new episodes of the animated Matt Groening sci-fi comedy, which will start airing on Comedy Central in 2010. In a joint statement issued tonight, Groening and co-producer David X. Cohen said: “We are thrilled to have our incredible cast back. The call has already gone out to the animators to put the mouths back on the characters.” Now “Futurama” fans can rest easy and simply wait until their show is back on the air with brand new episodes.Comedy Central can be found on channel 107 on Dish Network.
